CGC Label Colors Explained for Comic Collectors
Know what each CGC comic label means before you buy. Compare Universal, Signature Series, CGC x JSA, Qualified, Restored, and Conserved labels.
CGC label colors show the type of certification on a graded comic. They do not replace the grade, label text, certification record, or holder check. A blue label, yellow label, black-and-yellow label, green label, or purple label can change what you need to verify before you buy.
This guide explains the main CGC comic label colors in plain language. It also shows how to check a slab against the current official CGC label guide.
What information is on a CGC comic label?
A CGC label identifies the comic and shows its assigned grade. It can also show the certification number, page quality, signature details, restoration notes, qualifying defects, and other comments.
Start with the full label. Color is a quick visual signal, but the printed text gives the specific facts for that comic. Two slabs with the same color can have different grades, editions, signatures, or notes.
What do the main CGC label colors mean?
Blue: Universal
The blue Universal label is the standard CGC label for a comic graded as marked without a qualified or restored designation. CGC can still add special information to the label, so do not treat blue as a reason to skip the text.
Check the exact title, issue number, publisher, grade, page quality, and any comments. Then match the certification number to the official record.
Yellow: CGC Signature Series
The yellow Signature Series label is used for signatures witnessed under the CGC process. CGC states that these signatures are normally observed by an authorized representative. Select direct submissions from a signer or publisher can also qualify under its process.

Black and yellow: CGC x JSA Authentic Autograph
The black-and-yellow CGC x JSA label is for an autograph authenticated through the combined CGC and JSA service. This is different from the standard yellow Signature Series label. Signature Series is based on the witnessed process. CGC x JSA can authenticate an autograph that was not witnessed when it was signed.
Use the exact label wording. Do not describe every black-and-yellow label as Signature Series, and do not describe every yellow label as a later autograph authentication.
Green: Qualified
The green Qualified label is used when a comic has a significant defect that needs a clear description. CGC gives the example of a missing coupon that does not affect the story. The label can show a qualified grade that treats the stated defect separately.
Read the qualification before you compare the comic with a blue-label copy. A shared number grade does not make the two slabs equivalent when one has a stated qualifying defect.
Purple: Restored
The purple Restored label means CGC found evidence of repair intended to return the comic toward its original appearance. CGC uses a separate restoration scale to describe the type and extent of the work.
Do not treat restoration as a minor footnote. Read the restoration details and compare the comic with other restored copies that have similar work. A restored comic and an unrestored comic with the same numeric grade are not direct matches.
Blue and grey: Conserved
The blue-and-grey Conserved label is used for specific repairs that improve structural integrity and long-term preservation. CGC lists examples such as tear seals, support, staple replacement, piece reattachment, and some cleaning.
Conservation and restoration are separate CGC designations. Read the label and the official record before you decide which type of work is present.
Combined colors and No Grade
CGC also lists combined Signature Series Qualified and Signature Series Restored labels. These combine signature certification with a qualified or restored designation. An NG or No Grade label can apply when a comic is missing enough original material that CGC does not assign a numeric grade.

Why label color alone is not enough
A label color tells you the certification category. It does not confirm that an online listing shows the same slab, that the comic is the stated printing, or that the holder has no later damage.
It also does not promise rarity, demand, or future value. The number grade measures condition under the grading process. The label category describes other facts. Your buying check must cover both.
Six checks before you buy a CGC comic
1. Match the comic identification
Confirm the title, issue number, publisher, publication date, printing, and variant. Similar covers can belong to different editions.
2. Read every line of the label
Check the numeric grade, page quality, signer names, restoration or qualification text, and any other notes. Do not rely on a seller summary when the slab photo is available.
3. Verify the certification number
Enter the number in the official CGC lookup. Compare the record with the label and listing photos. Follow our CGC certification number checklist for the full process.
4. Review Grader Notes when available

5. Inspect the holder separately
Look for cracks, deep scratches, chips, open edges, or other damage. The grade belongs to the comic at the time of grading. It is not a current condition grade for the plastic holder.
6. Compare like with like
Compare the same issue, printing, cover, grade, page quality, label category, and signature status. A blue Universal copy, yellow Signature Series copy, and black-and-yellow CGC x JSA copy can serve different collecting goals.
A current catalog example
The ComicBookPlug graded-comics catalog currently includes King in Black #5 graded CGC x JSA 9.8. Its listing identifies the CGC x JSA certification in the product title. That wording matters because it separates autograph authentication from a standard witnessed Signature Series description.
