Absolute Batman Key Issues and Covers: A Collector's Guide
The Absolute Batman issues collectors watch most, from #1 to the Absolute Joker issues, and how to tell ratio, foil, second print and exclusive covers apart.
Absolute Batman is one of the most collected comic series of recent years. Written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Nick Dragotta, it launched DC's Absolute Universe on October 9, 2024, and its first issue was the best-selling comic of 2024 in the direct market. Almost every issue has several covers, prints and exclusives. This guide explains the issues collectors watch most and how to tell the covers apart before you buy.
What is Absolute Batman?
Absolute Batman reimagines Bruce Wayne without his family fortune. The Absolute Universe is a separate line from DC's main continuity, so its characters and villains are new versions with their own designs. The series sits alongside Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman. See the Absolute Universe collection for graded copies from the wider line.
Absolute Batman issues collectors watch
| Issue | Why collectors want it |
|---|---|
| #1 | The first issue of the series and of the Absolute Universe. It sold just under 400,000 copies across multiple printings in 2024. |
| #2 | The early follow-up to #1, with its own ratio and second print covers. |
| #15 | The full introduction of the Absolute Joker, with art by Jock. |
| #21 | The first meeting between Bruce Wayne and Jack Grimm, the Absolute Joker. |
| #25 | An anniversary-number issue with a large set of variant covers. |
Key status can change as a story develops. A villain's first full appearance, for example, can matter more to collectors years later than it did on release.
How to tell the covers apart
A single Absolute Batman issue can have a main cover, open order variants, 1:25 and higher ratio covers, foil editions, store and convention exclusives, and later printings. Always read the full listing title and the grading label. The main differences are:
- Cover letter: listings such as #25B or #15 Cover C name the cover in the publisher's solicitation. Each letter is a different cover.
- Ratio variants: a 1:25 or 1:50 cover was only available to stores in proportion to their orders. Read our guide to ratio variants.
- Printings: #1 and #2 had later printings. A second print is a different collectible from the first print, even with similar art.
- Finishes: foil, glow-in-the-dark and wraparound covers can share artwork with a standard cover.
- Exclusives: NYCC, MegaCon and store exclusives have their own covers and often smaller print runs.
- Foreign editions: translated editions, such as a German variant, are separate books from the US edition.
Our comic glossary defines each of these terms.
Signed Absolute Batman comics
Signed copies are graded with a CGC Signature Series or CGC x JSA label that names each signer. The series creators, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, have signed many graded copies. Guest cover artists also sign their own covers, such as Eric Canete on #17 and #18. Remember that a cover artist's name in a title describes the cover. Only the names on the label signed the book. Read our guide to CGC Signature Series for more detail.
